Ranging in size from a quarter of an inch to larger than a cantaloupe, uterine fibroids are noncancerous tumors that can develop in the uterus of premenopausal women. According to the National Institutes of Health, African-American women are at the highest risk for fibroids and as many as 50 percent have fibroids of a significant size.
